Back in 1981, it formed part of the soundtrack accompanying the race riots erupting in places like Brixton, Handsworth and St. "One In Ten" will earn the rare distinction of being "versioned" by Jamaican reggae acts in future. A statistical reminder of a world that doesn’t care," "One In Ten" became an anthem of the British protest movement, and a genuine counterpart to the equally motivated songs being written by the likes of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh in the Caribbean. With lyrics like "Nobody knows me, but I’m always there. The sound was immediately brighter, harder and more professional, yet the spirit and commitment underpinning the band’s songs remained resolutely unchanged, as heard on "One In Ten," written about, among other things, the UK’s record number of unemployed. "Signing Off" was still in the charts when they released their second album "Present Arms" in the summer of 1981. They also signed a licensing deal with CBS, which ensured them far better distribution. 2 in the UK and stayed on the nation’s album charts for 72 weeks.Īt the end of 1980, UB40 terminated their contract with Graduate and formed their own record company, DEP International, with all eight members owning an equal share. They were unafraid to stand up and be counted, and British audiences instinctively loved them for it. Accepting the truth of their own situation amidst a sea of other reggae songs proclaiming black heritage gave us a valuable insight into where UB40 were coming from. "I’m a British subject, not proud of it, while I carry the burden of shame," they sang on one of the tracks. As a multi-cultural band from Birmingham, UB40 weren’t drawn into trying to sound "authentic," and there was considerably more depth to their music than that of many punk and 2Tone bands. There was nothing else like it at the time. The cover artwork memorably duplicated an unemployment benefit card, with the title "Signing Off" rubber-stamped in red, but it was the music that quickly worked its way into the affections of a young, mainly student crowd with it’s knowing lyrics, solid reggae rhythms and dubby, instrumental passages, offset by warm sax solos and Jamaican style scatting. Their deal allowed them much more creative freedom than if they had signed with a major label. UB40’s first album was released the following September, on Graduate Records. Their line-up will remain unchanged for thirty years, and they will continue playing a mix of original material and an inspired choice of reggae covers in a style that’s instantly accessible with its bright melodies and sweeping horn arrangements – one that’s allied to a formidable rhythm section in James Brown (drums) and Earl Falconer (bass) capable of holding its own with anything from Jamaica. Their political convictions hadn’t been gleaned second hand either, but cemented in place whilst attending marches protesting against the National Front, or rallies organised by Rock Against Racism.īy the time Chrissie Hynde invited them to tour with the Pretenders during the Spring of 1980 and their debut single "King b/w Food For Thought" had sailed into the UK Top 5, all the essential elements of UB40 were already in place. The group had nailed their colours to the mast by naming themselves after an unemployment benefit form. Initially, they thought of themselves as an instrumental "jazz-dub-reggae" band, but by the time Robin was persuaded to rejoin and much later they’d recruited Michael Virtue and lastly Astro – who’d learnt his craft with Birmingham sound-system Duke Alloy – the group had already aligned themselves to left-wing political ideals and forged their own identity, separate from the many punk and Two Tone outfits around at that time. Robin’s younger brother Ali, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers and James Brown all knew each other from Moseley School of Art, whilst Norman Hassan had been a friend of the Campbell’s since junior school. By the summer of 1978, something else did happen, and the nucleus of UB40 began rehearsing in a local basement. You could either work in one of the local factories, like Robin Campbell did, or scuffle along aimlessly whilst waiting for something else to happen. The choice was simple if you’d left school early. The group’s led a charmed life in many respects it’s true, but it’s been a long haul since the days they’d meet up in the bars and clubs around Moseley, and some of them had to scrape by on less than £8 a week unemployment benefit. The story of UB40, and how this group of young friends from Birmingham transcended their working-class origins to become the world’s most successful reggae band, selling over 100 million records and spending over a combined 11 years in the UK album charts, is not the stuff of fairytales as might be imagined. When I did this, I got a total of 4 processes associated with iCoreService. What's going on with this command? "sudo" means Super User Do, basically forcing the computer to do what you want because you're the admin "kill" issues a signal to terminate the process with whatever PID number you pass in after. Type it in, hit enter, and that's it, the process should be gone now. The terminal will prompt you for your password. Issue that same command, but now with sudo in front: sudo kill NUMBER_GOES_HERE (E.g., you would write something like kill 1253, but using the numbers that came up from the previous command.)Īt this point, it should tell you that you don't have the permissions to do that - you need to prove that you really are an admin and should be allowed. Use this command, running it for each PID you just found: kill NUMBER_GOES_HERE Now we're going to kill each of those processes. In total, we're pulling out all those processes that have 'iCoreService' in the name. *: If you're wary of people telling you to enter random terminal commands, good for you! Here's what each part does: "ps -A" lists all processes currently running "|" pipes that into the next command (in other words, that info is passed along to the next part) "grep" searches for matches to whatever it is given, in this case 'iCoreService'. ( Note: Your grep command will be one of the processes that gets returned - you can ignore that, but nothing bad will happen if you try to kill it either.) Each process will have a number at the very front: that is the PID. When you enter that command*, it will return a list off all processes that have iCoreService somewhere in their name. We can find the associated PIDs for each thing listed above with a command of this form: ps -A | grep iCoreService You can use the command killall to kill processes that match by name, but I prefer to find the PID (Process ID number) associated with what I need to knock out, then issue kill commands for those PIDs. It makes you worried they actually belong to something you want to keep): According to the uninstall guide from TrendMicro there are three main processes we want to kill (As a side note, it's a little unnerving that the names Trend Micro uses are so generic. Killing Interfering Processesįirst, we need to knock out the processes that interfere with deleting Trend Micro. If you do not have admin privileges, the below guide will not work.įinally, it would probably be a good idea to make a back-up before starting, just in case something goes wrong. You can find it at Applications/Utilities/Terminal.Īdditionally, you will need to be an admin on your computer. If you've never used Terminal before, be careful - nothing below should harm anything (other than the Trend Micro anti-virus), but it's a very powerful tool, and you can really mess stuff up if you aren't careful. You're going to need to do this through the Terminal program. Basically, we're going to take this in two major moves: 1) killing those interfering processes, 2) deleting all the files associated with Trend Micro. I just did this myself, here's what I learned while doing it.Ī lot of the difficulty in uninstalling Trend Micro comes from the fact that it spawns processes that then interfere with removing it (this actually makes sense for an anti-virus, but it certainly makes it a challenge when we need to remove it by hand). Two weeks after she started, an engineer walked into the Black computers’ office seeking help. She was in a room full of Black women professionals, all with their own desks and computing machines. On Katherine’s first day, she was amazed. Katherine drove to the NACA facility and requested an application. Because of this, the engineers often preferred working with the more knowledgeable Black computers. Black computers needed college degrees and high GPAs. The hiring requirements for Black computers were different than for white computers. Therefore, NACA had two divisions of computers-one for white women and another for Black women. And NACA’s computers were critical to complete this work.Īlthough NACA was segregated, it was required by federal law that federal government employers not discriminate on the basis of race. Both countries were eager to create aircraft for national defense. At this time, the United States was involved in a cold war with Russia. The women were called computers because they completed all of the calculations for the male engineers on staff. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was hiring women with math experience. Katherine soon learned of a job opportunity that seemed too good to be true. Also, there were federal government facilities nearby where Katherine might find work. Looking for a fresh start, they moved to Newport News, Virginia. In 1951, Katherine and Jimmie’s home caught fire. During summer break, Jimmie worked as a chauffeur and Katherine as a maid because their teaching salaries were not enough to cover their expenses. She and Jimmie soon had three daughters, born in 1940, 1943, and 1944.īy 1947, Katherine returned to teaching with Jimmie. After one year, Katherine returned to Virginia. As an educated Black woman, teaching was the most likely profession for her, with or without a graduate degree. Katherine loved high-level math, but she did not see the value in completing her graduate degree. That same year, Katherine accepted an invitation to integrate West Virginia University as one of the first Black graduate students. Within a few months, Katherine took a job teaching and met fellow educator Jimmie Goble. By 18, she graduated with a double degree in French and math. After high school, she enrolled at the historically Black college, West Virginia State. Katherine was incredibly smart and finished high school when she was just 13 years old. And, in order to reach the nearest Black high school, the Coleman family had to move 80 miles. The Black school had only two rooms for seven grades. At that time, the school system was segregated. This was an ambitious goal for a Black family in the South. Katherine’s parents were determined their four children would complete college. Katherine Coleman was born on August 26, 1918, in West Virginia. For now, however, players will still have to contend with broken characters. With the Chinese New Year around the corner, Pokémon UNITE 1.4.1.3 patch update has added an exclusive event for the fans where they can log in every day and claim rewards. This indicates that bugged characters could possibly be removed from Ranked matches if fans request it enough. The studio also seems to have listened to the Pokemon Unite pay-to-win criticisms, promising in a recent blog post to level the playing field with a new mode that doesn't rely on upgradable Held Items. However, TiMi Studios has been making an effort more recently to try and address community concerns quicker. A lack of communication from the MOBA's developers has been criticized since the first undetailed patch notes for the game, and issues like the Pokemon Unite Lucario bug spotlights this problem again. The extended wait-time for patches of known bugs and the frequent occurrence of serious glitches is causing a lot of frustration within the community. Some fans have been criticizing TiMi Studios for not removing Lucario and Crustle from Ranked matches while they are clearly bugged, pointing out that this practice is common in other MOBA titles like Smite. The Merfolk came across the Simia at some undefined point between the great war (getting to that) and the arrival of the Simia in the land of the isles. Skilled in hunting and archery, the Simia cultivated the land and became one with nature. These being referred to themselves as Simia, they often carry a beast like form that resembles an ape, yet they are far more intelligent then the average primate. Years after the ancestors of the Merfolk were forced to live underwater, a new race of land dwellers began to inhabit the isles above the oceans. Centuries passed undisturbed for these beings, completely ignorant to what happened upon the isles above their water. These people, the Merfolk lived in harmony, collecting knowledge, and prospering in their underwater utopia they name Sitnalta. (In the complete lore I will get more into this) The Merfolk people are strong, magic, water dwelling beings who have been cursed to an eternity forced underwater. It is not them in their native form, but yet cursed, by the god they loved, to the oceans they reaped. The oceans of the land once belonged to an ancient race of beings, not much is known about them, but all that can be said is that a footprint of them still exists. The full lore is still being written and I most likely will not show it off untill either server launch or a few days before.* *Please note that I am only giving a very small portion of the lore just to give those who are interested a basic understanding of what RA's story truly is. This mostly being for the sake of build consistency and driving imagination and depth into the world.įor those interested the lore is provided here: Nevertheless despite Rising Atlantis no longer being designed for it's original purpose I do intend to stay true to the original lore. However I am considering turning it upon completion into an adventure map. Since my resurrection of the map I've decided to diverge from the path of creating a Role-playing server and to simple build a well themed, yet interesting map. Originally intended to serve as a Role-playing server, The beginning of the construction of the map was heavily influenced by the lore provided below. Rising Atlantis Story/Design:īefore delving into the build itself, it may serve the better good for me to clarify to those of you who are new to the project the bases of Rising Atlantis (RA). Originally started back on "Terraria Online", the project has now been transferred over to the official Terraria Forums. Started April 1, 2013, Rising Atlantis is still very much work in progress and after undergoing multiple hiatuses, work has been resumed on it. Rising Atlantis has been an ongoing endeavor to build what may be one of the largest, most ambitious maps in Terrarian history. Response: “He’s not feeling 100 per cent so not at the PC but will be this evening.” Will be what? Feeling 100 per cent? Be at prize giving? Both? Miraculous recovery? Note: No “he’s ill” just “he’s not 100 per cent”. I text Mercedes’ head of F1 communications Bradley Lord about the star’s absence. Do press conferences form part of the ceremony? Grey area. It dawns: the five-time F1 world champion, who seemingly bends the Mercedes empire unto his will, ain’t going to grace the media with his presence despite Clause 6.6 of the F1 Sporting Regulations stating: Drivers finishing first, second and third in the championship must be present at the annual FIA Prize Giving ceremony.Ĭlearly, in typical F1 fashion, the team has found a loophole. Questions about the star draw’s absence are met with shrugged shoulders and silence. While interviewing the Frenchman – good value due to his thoughtful responses – I notice (a now-moustached) Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen hanging about, but no Lewis Hamilton. I text my objections to the organisers and am told that “due to time constraints we can’t entertain media questions…”, but am granted (outside) access to Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne. Last week’s column about independent media, a topic which was received well by some if not all of my media colleagues, suddenly seems very timely. are delayed so we get under way around 30 minutes late once the sporting proceedings begin I realise we are part of a scripted conference: MC Tom Clarkson, working through a list of set questions, holds court, and no media questions are granted. I’m advised the 11:00 press conference with FIA president Jean Todt and RAF president Victor Kiryanov is postponed until 13:30, so wander about the immediate hotel precinct before heading to the conference centre across the river for registration and a front-row seat. This room is covered courtesy of hosts Russian Automobile Federation – thank you, RAF – as the trip is two-nighter for most due to flight schedules, the two-hour (or three- from UK) time shift eastwards and timing of the event, but all other costs are for our own accounts. 10:00įortunately the Lotte has a vacant room despite my early arrival, so I’m checked-in and settled in within 30 minutes. The 30km journey takes us almost and hour and a half in heavy traffic. Or, as in the case of Nico Rosberg in 2016, a total bombshell… 08:00Īfter a bland hotel breakfast, I order an Uber to the Lotte Hotel in downtown St Petersburg, having offered my Belgian WRX media colleague Marie-Laure Pirson, per chance staying in the same hotel, a ride. It’s our last chance to find out how the championship was won – or not – and the relaxed environment often elicits thoughtful and interesting responses. By the time they face the press again when the 2019 cars are launched their thoughts will understandably have turned to the season ahead instead of the year just gone. This is, after all, our final opportunity to hear from the year’s top drivers before the off-season sets in. The latter is a significant attraction: the teams have previously been generous with their time. The reason for my first visit to this winter wonderland city is two-fold: Friday’s FIA Awards Gala, to which I’d been invited as a member of the FIA’s Media Group, and the world champions press conferences. Not wishing to commute to a foreign city in the dark of winter, I’d elected to overnight at the airport, then catch an Uber at a more civilised hour. I wake up to (distant) sound of aircraft taking off – I’m in a hotel room on the perimeter of St Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport, having landed late Thursday evening. 0600 Friday 7 December, Park Inn, St Petersburg Grin and bear it, dodge it, or hit the bar? The top three Formula 1 drivers of 2018 had different ways of dealing with the obligation of attending the FIA’s end-of-season reports in his final Formula 1 diary of 2018. “I think all that absolutely factored into it… You start to see how we’re conditioned as people… about masculinity and femininity and what’s okay and what isn’t.”Īfter Barney became a huge hit, bizarre stories began to circulate about him and those associated with the character. “The purplish color, I think the way he danced around, I think the feminine-like hands and, of course, the voice contributed to the tropes of what we think about with regard to masculinity and male toys and a scary dinosaur,” Chiodi says. “And if we do see that, they’re penalized.”Įxecutive Producer Joel Chiodi of Scout Productions Scout ProductionsĬhiodi and others identify an element of homophobia behind the visceral anger Barney inspired on such a wide scale. “We’re just not used to – in our culture – seeing men that are kind, vulnerable and sweet,” she comments in the documentary. Yalda Uhls, a child psychologist and former movie industry executive, detects a reason for the negative reaction to Barney’s warm and supportive nature. The series meticulously unpacks what caused the Barney backlash. “There’s obviously a jealousy issue there, as silly as that may sound, but that’s a real feeling.” “He came home from work one day expecting her to say, ‘Hey, dad!’ But she’s glued to the television,” Avallone explains. The filmmakers interviewed Robert Curran, who founded the I Hate Barney Secret Society in 1993, after his two-year-old daughter became obsessed with Barney. They want to hear the same song, they want to hear the same story.”īut that very repetition, along with Barney’s relentlessly upbeat attitude, is part of what drove parents – and others beyond the target audience - crazy. As West observes in the film, “With a preschool kid, repetition represents safety. With a great big hug/And a kiss from me to you/Won’t you say you love me too?”īarney fans loved to sing and dance along. West came up with the character’s giggly, goofy voice, and sang his cheery song (to the melody of “This Old Man”): “I love you, you love me/We’re a happy family. And once that character landed, it just exploded.”īob West, the original voice of Barney the Purple Dinosaur Peacock Sheryl Leach and the Barney crew really found a market. “When Barney came out in ‘92, Nick Junior was just starting, Disney Channel wasn’t like the way it became. “The show came back on in 1993, their second season… 1993 is what they call their ‘Elvis’ year. Within a few years, an executive with Connecticut Public Television worked with Leach to turn her creation into a PBS series, Barney & Friends, which launched in 1992. The first Barney home videos came out in 1988. Because if you knew what the odds against making this thing were, you would never even try.” “You see this sweet person who against all odds, almost because of her naivete, she succeeded. “Sheryl’s amazing journey… along with that teacher’s heart and why she created it - I even get the chills a little bit ,” says executive producer Joel Chiodi, head of documentaries and SVP of strategic development at Scout Productions, which produced the series.
